"In a moneyless society there is no freedom of choice, since it is ruled by sheer power, and no equality, since brute force cannot be distributed. Money power can be controlled without coercion.
When you consider the role played by Jews, a weak minority, and by the merchant class while still under the heels of feudal lords in the development of banking, it will seem plausible that money was invented by the weak. The wielders of absolute power have always hated money. They expect people to be motivated by noble ideals and end up by using terror to keep things going. The moment money ceases to play a dominant role, there will be an end to automatic progress. The breakdown of civilization will be marked by a breakdown of currencies. Money and profit-making may seem trivial and mean. But everyday life is likely to be meager and difficult where people will act and strive only when animated by noble motives."

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."
"History will be kind to me for I intend to write it."
"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries."

Shawshank Redemption Factoids:
*The movie was based on a Stephen King novella titled "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption."
*King sold the rights to the novella for $5,000 in the late 80's.
*The character "Red" was Irish, convicted of murdering his wife for insurance money, and in the process inadvertently also killed two other people.
*Morgan Freeman was selected to play "Red" over the likes of Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Harrison Ford.
*Animal rights groups protested "Brooks" feeding live maggots to his pet crow, claiming it was cruel to the maggot, so the crew had to find a maggot that had died of natural causes before shooting the scene.

For those wondering why we have an "illegal" immigration problem, the following factoid could shed some light: The government only has about 100 beds to house "illegal" families with children that are apprehended in the country (none in the Rio Grande Valley where the vast majority of "illegal" immigrants cross into the U.S.). Just in this fiscal year, an estimated 39,000 people traveling in family groups have been detained, with almost all being released because there is no place to hold the families. Some are monitored by ankle bracelets, and although they would "illegally" cross into a foreign country, certainly they wouldn't conceive the idea to "illegally" remove the monitoring devices... "The persistently high black jobless rate is more a consequence of unemployability than of discrimination in hiring. The black-white learning gap stems from a dearth of education choices for ghetto children, not biased tests or a shortage of education funding. And although black civil rights leaders cite a supposedly racist criminal justice system to explain why our prisons house so many black men, it has been obvious for decades that the real culprit is errant black behavior too often celebrated in black culture."

Quotes from Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian"
"Moral law is an invention of mankind for the disenfranchisement of the powerful in favor of the weak. Historical law subverts it at every turn. A moral view can never be proven right or wrong by any ultimate test. A man falling dead in a duel is not thought thereby to be proven in error as to his views. His very involvement in such a trial gives evidence of a new and broader view. The willingness of the principals to forgo further argument as the triviality which it in fact is and to petition directly the chambers of the historical absolute clearly indicates of how little moment are the opinions and of what great moment the divergences thereof. For the argument is indeed trivial, but not so the separate wills thereby made manifest. Man's vanity may well approach the infinite in capacity but his knowledge remains imperfect and howevermuch he comes to value his judgments ultimately he must submit them before a higher court."
"War is the ultimate game because war is at last a forcing of the unity of existence. War is god."
"What joins men together is not the sharing of bread, but the sharing of enemies."
