Global Murder Statistics

* Latin America is the most violent region in the world, accounting for 134,519 of the worlds 440,000 homicides in 2012.

* Latin America accounted for 31% of global homicides in 2012, yet only makes up 8% of the worlds population.

* Globally, Brazil had the most homicides in 2012 with 50,108 (India was second with 43,355).

* The twenty countries with the highest murder rate per 100,000 in 2012 were all in Latin America or Africa (thirteen in Latin America and seven in Africa).

* A Mexican think tank (Mexican Institute for Competitiveness) lists several factors for the high murder rates in the Latin American region, including a culture of violence and economic inequality.
